I'm tired of the pokemon trading card game being expensive and terrible. So I'm making my own. I'm posting here to help me organize my thoughts and also to get feedback and input from your guys. This is a MASSIVE project, but one that I think could be incredibly fun and rewarding. Feel free to contribute as I'm open to ideas and suggestions.
I'm literally starting from nothing here, so I'll update what I have as I go. It will be likely to change and evolve as my thoughts come into focus and I get feedback from you guys. Here's an outline of what I have so far:
Players
I'd like to make it 2-4 players, at least to start
Goal
The goal is to end the game with the most badges. The game ends when the last card from the "Trainer" deck is revealed (not defeated, revealed).
Materials
Cards (pokemon, items/TMs, trainers)
Dice
Coins (these can be any markers you chose to use, including dice that are differentiated from damage dice)
Card Types
Pokemon
These are your pokemon. You can only have up to six at one time, and only one pokemon maybe be "active." If you want to get a new pokemon after you already have six, you must release one of your current pokemon.
Attack cards
These are used to have your pokemon attack. Simple attacks like "tackle" can be used by any pokemon, while type specific attacks like "water gun" and "vine whip" can only be used by pokemon of their type. Strong attacks like "hydro pump" and "power whip" can only be used by evolved pokemon.
Action cards
These cards give you an edge, either through healing, allowing you to catch more pokemon, or by giving you a special ability for the turn.
Trainer Cards
These are trainers you can defeat to earn money, badges, or gain an upper hand.
Set Up
After each player chooses their starter deck, separate the rest of the cards into three different deck: wild pokemon, actions, trainers
Players should put their starting pokemon into the active spot and then shuffle their decks, drawing six cards.
Shuffle each communal deck and reveal the top five cards in a line.
Roll the die to see who goes first. Play continues in a clockwise direction.
On Your Turn
Draw/Discard until you have exactly six cards in your hand
Switch your active pokemon (optional)
Play attack/action cards, discard cards, and buy items (two of four)
End turn
Attacking
If you choose to attack on your turn, you can play as many attack cards as you want, as long as your active pokemon is able to use those attacks. After playing an attack card, put it in your discard pile.
You can choose to attack any revealed wild pokemon or any reveled trainers.
Action cards
You can play as many actions as you want during your turn, as long as that actions effects can resolve (You can't play actions just to discard them. Their effect must activate)
Shopping
You can spend your coins to buy as many of the face up items/attacks as you want from the shop. Add these cards to your discard pile.
Discarding
Discard cards you do not want.
Additional Rules
Whiting out
If all of your pokemon are KOd, you have Whited Out. If you White Out, revive your poekmon and then discard all of your coins. If you White Out on your turn, your turn ends immediately.
Evolution
There are two ways to evolve your pokemon.
1) You can capture OR defeat it's evolution from the wild pokemon deck.
2) You can use the item Rare Candy to search the wild pokemon deck for the evolution.
Catching
In order to catch a new pokemon, you must have at least one pokeball in your hand. Each pokemon has three different catch rates:
Catch rate at full health
Catch rate at half or below health (rounded up)
Catch rate at ten hit points
These are noted on the card from highest to lowest.
ex: 6:3:1 means that in order to catch this pokemon at full health, you would need to roll a six or higher. To catch it at half health a three or higher, and at 10hp, a one.
Each pokeball give you a certain amount of dice to roll when you attempt a catch. These dice are noted on the card.
Abilities
Some pokemon and trainers have special abilities. These are noted on the card and are self explanatory.
Flying
Some pokemon have the ability to fly. This will be denoted by a special "flying" mark on their card. Flying pokemon have access to attacks other pokemon do not.
Cards (these are all the cards in the game. Cards with a "*" mean that art for that card has already be completed.)
FAQs:
What is a deck building game?
A deck building game is a card game where, unlike a collectable card game, everyone shares the same pool of cards for the entirety of the game. Players start with similar, very simple, decks. The idea is to slowly build up your deck over the course of the game, making the best choices about what to add in order to get an upper-hand on your opponents.
Doesn't Pokemon already has a card game?
Yes, but it's expensive and kind of bad (right now). What pokemon has is a collectable card game. While collectable card games are all about forcing players to buy booster packs, deck building games are focused much more on the strategy and gameplay aspects.
Does this game use the regular pokemon cards?
Right now I'm thinking that it can't. I originally wanted to have it use the cards that we already have, but it seems like it might be too hard to work all though mechanics into the game. I will mostly likely need to make all my cards from scratch...
