It seems in most console and handheld RPGs these days, weapons and armors are very plain and not so much interesting at all. Recently, I had came up with a system that could breath a little life into any RPG; espically one that's homebrew or non-commercial. A system where weapons and armor are categorized into a letter grade system, and a weapon/armor's letter grade determines factors such as it's strength/protection, rarity, and sellability. Letter Grades - S Grade (The best. Often have special things to them such as HP recovery or protection from status effects. Usually found after beating the game, and often require extensive tasks/work to find them.)
- A Grade (Second best. Often expensive but well worth the price. Found late into the game.)
- B Grade (Your above-average kind. Somewhat expensive and unlike C/D/E grade, don't tend to break/damage less.)
- C Grade (Average. Reasonable prices, with the occasional special effect such as elemental damage or protection from status effects. Usually encountered during the middle of the game and up to 3/4 of it's playtime.)
- D Grade (Under-average. Often have no special effects, and break/damage commonly. Found after a few hours progress or so.)
- E Grade (The worst. Typically found in the beginning of the game, and damage/break very easily.)

This type of system already exists in a game. Fire Emblem.

Suggestion: don't use letters.... they are found in way to many games.....

I develop small time RPG's, and this is actually pretty good, but I use materials (iron is basic, steel is middle, silver is best, others have special effects) in my weapons, and yes Fire Emblem inspired that, however, that isn't a half bad system for rating weapons.

Dragon Age uses pretty much the same thing as well (only color coded and material based) as do many other games. It is a good idea...which is why it's already been done.
